According to local media on Monday, the Maldivian Democratic Party, the primary opposition party and the party with the majority in the Parliament, is planning to launch a motion for President Mohamed Muizzu’s impeachment.

An MDP MP notified Sun.mv on Monday afternoon that the MDP and Democrats had accumulated enough signatures to present an impeachment proposal. The opposition party has not yet submitted it to the Parliament.

According to ANI, a video posted by Adhahdhu shows police officers gathering outside the Parliament building with shields in preparation for the most recent legislative session.

Violence broke out in the Maldives parliament earlier on Sunday when legislators from the ruling PPM/PNC party meddled with the speakers’ speeches. A crucial legislative vote on the Muizzu government’s approval was set for this coming Sunday.

According to a report by The Sun, the MDP and the Democrats have accumulated signatures for an impeachment resolution. A total of 34 members—including Democrats and MDP representatives—have voted in favor of the impeachment resolution against the president.

This occurs one day after pro-government lawmakers from the People’s National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) started acting violently in the Maldives Parliament, interfering with the session and confronting the Speakers.

The MDP and Democrats had obtained enough signatures to file an impeachment resolution, according to an MDP MP who spoke with Sun.mv on Monday afternoon.

The resolution to impeach the president has garnered support from 34 members, including Democrats and MDP lawmakers, according to the news outlet Adhahdhu, which is located in the Maldives.

A special session was called to seek legislative approval for the ministers in President Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet, and that is when the altercation started. These were the attorney general Ahmed Usham, the minister of economics Mohamed Saeed, the minister of housing Dr. Ali Haidar, and the minister of Islam Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

The MDP’s parliamentary group meeting on Monday resulted in a unanimous decision to file an impeachment motion, according to The Edition.mv.

Following the disruption of parliament on Sunday, the MDP resolved that if government lawmakers continued to interrupt parliament, it would not approve Ali Ihusan, the home minister, and Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, the defense minister, according to The Sun.

President Mohamed Muizzu has come under fire from the opposition parties for his pro-China stance following the government’s approval of a Chinese espionage ship to port in Male.

The biggest opposition party in the nation is preparing to begin the process of impeachment against Mohamed Muizzu, the president of the Maldives and an admirer of China. The Maldivian Democratic Party, the main opposition party, is in control of the legislature and has already begun gathering signatures in order to file for impeachment.

After the government allowed a Chinese espionage ship to dock in Male, the opposition parties attacked President Muizzu for his pro-China stance.

The Opposition chose to begin the impeachment procedure in response to the violent altercation that occurred in parliament yesterday.

Resistance has been encountered by President Muizzu, who assumed office with a strong position against India. This is especially true in light of the diplomatic fallout with New Delhi over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s widely circulated post about his visit to the Lakshadweep islands.

The latest in the anti-India rhetoric, Mr. Muizzu demanded that India remove its around eighty thousand troops from the country by the middle of March, portraying their presence as a security risk to the island nation.

In a joint press release, the Democrats and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) branded the government’s recent policy change as “extremely detrimental” to the long-term development of the country and said that it had taken a “stark” anti-Indian stance.

The long-term growth of the nation will be severely harmed by alienating any development partner, particularly the most steadfast ally in the nation, the statement stated. Additionally, it emphasized that “the stability and security of the Maldives depend on stability and security in the Indian Ocean.”

The ability of succeeding administrations to “work with all development partners for the benefit of the people of the Maldives, as the Maldives has traditionally done,” was emphasized by both the MDP and the Democrats.
