Suffering a heart attack, Urdu poet Munawwar Rana died on Sunday at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He had spent the previous six days on a ventilator.
At the age of 71 Munawwar Rana passed away. The Urdu poet was having frequent treatment for kidney ailments, which required dialysis, in addition to fighting a lung and throat infection since 2017. He was receiving treatment at the Lucknow PGI hospital.

Munawwar Rana was born in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, on November 26, 1952. He is well-known for his ghazals and other significant additions to Urdu literature.
His most well-known poem, “Maa,” honored motherhood’s blessings in the classic ghazal format.

Shaheed Shodha Sansthan gave him the Maati Ratan Samman in 2012 in honor of his contributions to Urdu literature. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poetry “Shahdaba.”
Throughout his career, he has won various honors such as the Saraswati Samaj Award, the Ghalib Award, the Dr. Zakir Hussain Award, the Ameer Khusro Award, and the Mir Taqi Mir Award.
