This time, the industrial hub of Madhya Pradesh, Indore, and the city of Surat in Gujarat tied for first position in the central government’s annual cleanliness study for 2023.

The city of Indore remains at the number one position among India’s “cleanest cities” for seven years running, and its efficient, long-lasting, and sustainable waste management system, according to local officials, has greatly contributed to this achievement.

More than 4,400 cities competed fiercely in the survey, which was based on the theme “Waste to Wealth” in various categories.

At a function in New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu presented the winners with their awards. The survey carried a total of 9,500 marks.

The ‘3 R’ (reduce, reuse, and recycle) centers, ‘banks’ of cloth bags and utensils, parks made from waste materials that can be used again, and home composting units have all contributed to the reduce waste in the city.

According to the Indore Municipal Corporation’s (IMC) consultant for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh received 4,709.40 out of 4,830 marks under the category of “Service Level Progress” for the segregated collection, processing, and disposal of various waste types.

According to the Indore Municipal Corporation’s (IMC)

According to IMC officials, the waste from 70,543 commercial establishments and 4.65 lakh households is processed and disposed of at various plants in the city after being systematically sorted at the primary source.

Every day, the city collects roughly 692 tonnes of wet waste, 683 tonnes of dry waste, and 179 tonnes of plastic waste under various categories.

A business working under a public-private partnership (PPP) is running a “Gobar-Dhan” plant on 15 acres of land at the city’s Devguradiya trenching area, and 110 city buses are powered by the bio-CNG produced at this plant, which is sold to the municipal corporation for Rs 5 per kilogram less than the going rate in the market.

It can produce 100 tons of organic fertilizers and 17,000 to 18,000 kg of bio-CNG per day by processing 550 tons of wet waste (such as leftover fruits, vegetables, and raw meat).

850 specially built cars with separate compartments for bio-waste products like sanitary napkins and diapers are driven throughout the city. Waste from city houses is collected at the doorstep.
